Painted Hills of Oregon

The Oregon painted hills in John Day National Monument were formed by layers of laterite soil deposited by recurring floods. Painted Hills is one of three units in the John Day National Monument. The brilliant colors make a sharp contrast to the surrounding high desert landscape.
